China Box Office: ‘Project Hail Mary’ Rockets to Number One

Sci-Fi Takes the Lead

Columbia Pictures’ ‘Project Hail Mary’ zoomed past the competition to claim the top spot at China’s box office this weekend. The sci-fi flick raked in a cool RMB53.3 million ($7.5 million) in its second week, bringing its total haul to $18.3 million. Not bad for a movie about saving the world, one Chinese yuan at a time.

Meanwhile, Disney’s ‘Hoppers’ hopped down to second place. The animated adventure collected $5 million, pushing its total earnings to $16.3 million. It seems even animated critters can’t escape the gravitational pull of a good space drama.

Racers and Warriors

In third place, ‘Pegasus 3’ continued its high-speed chase, adding $3.4 million to its impressive $612.3 million total. Directed by Han Han and starring Shen Teng, this racing comedy keeps audiences revved up with legendary racer Zhang Chi leading his underdog team in a grueling international rally.

‘Blades of the Guardians’ sliced its way into fourth, earning $1.9 million. This martial arts epic, directed by Yuen Woo-ping, follows mercenary Dao Ma on a perilous journey across the Western Regions. With a cumulative total of $200.1 million, it’s clear that audiences can’t resist a good sword fight.

Comedy-Drama and Box Office Blues

Rounding out the top five is ‘It’s OK,’ a comedy-drama that earned $1.7 million in its opening weekend. Directed by Yang Lina, the film stars Wen Qi and Qin Hailu, and tells the story of Xu Ke, whose medical plans are derailed by her mother’s unexpected visit. A little family drama never hurt the box office.

Overall, China’s weekend box office took in $25.3 million. However, the year-to-date revenue for 2026 is down 51.3% compared to 2025, standing at $1.67 billion. Looks like the box office needs a hero of its own to save the day.
