Hospital Strike Turns Deadly
A strike on the Al Daein Teaching Hospital in Sudan’s Darfur region left at least 64 dead, including 13 children. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the grim numbers after the attack last Friday. The hospital is now a non-functional pile of rubble, with 89 more injured souls added to the toll.
The hospital was supposed to be a sanctuary of healing but turned into a battleground casualty. WHO’s Tedros Ghebreyesus took to X to lament the loss, as if words could mend the wounds of war. But hey, at least someone noticed.
Fingers Point in All Directions
Sudan’s chaos began in April 2023, when military and paramilitary forces decided diplomacy was overrated. Now, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the military are playing the blame game over this latest tragedy. The RSF points fingers at the military, while the army denies everything, claiming the strike aimed at a nearby police station.
Anonymous military officials, who apparently missed the memo on transparency, confirmed the police station story. Meanwhile, the RSF insists it’s all the military’s fault. It’s a classic case of ‘he said, she said,’ but with more bombs.
Conflict’s Grim Statistics
The Sudan conflict has already claimed over 40,000 lives, according to the U.N., though aid groups suggest that number is a gross understatement. The WHO reports over 2,000 deaths from attacks on medical facilities alone. It’s a dark reminder that war doesn’t discriminate between battlefields and hospitals.
Ghebreyesus’s plea for de-escalation is as hopeful as it is ignored. The bloodshed continues, with no signs of stopping. But hey, at least they’re consistent in their chaos.
